I’m about to launch a game on Kickstarter, but Covid has thrown a few curves in terms of manufacturing and freight costs. The standard wisdom is that a game’s MSRP should be 5x the landed cost, which is how we structured things. Now costs have gone up considerably. We can still produce the game at the originally planned MSRP but with a negligible margin. A $10 bump ($69 USD rather than $59 USD) would bring things closer to the original, anticipated margin, but would it discourage people from purchasing a game they had intended to back at the lower price?
Personally, I back games that appeal to me thematically or have interesting mechanics and cost is secondary. I am also sensitive to the fact that not everyone has that luxury. It honestly isn’t about maximizing how much we can get for each copy, but trying to reach a level that it makes sense to continue on other games we are developing. I would much rather continue to contribute to the gaming community rather than being a one hit wonder if our game funds. Thoughts?
