This vulnerability, revealed reccntly, highlights the pros and cons of AI integration: immense efficiency gains paired with potentially devastating risks.
At the core of this issue is Cursor, an AI-powered code editor lauded for its smart autocompletion, real-time error detection, and automated suggestions that streamline complex programming tasks.
Coinbase, which remains the leading U.S.-based crypto exchange in terms of overall trading volume and scope of operations, has aggressively embraced Cursor as its primary tool.
This past month, the company’s engineering team reported that every single developer was utilizing it, a mandate pushed by CEO Brian Armstrong.
Just days before the exploit’s disclosure, Armstrong claimed on social media that AI-generated code now accounts for about 40% of Coinbase‘s daily output, with ambitions to surpass 50% by October.
He emphasized responsible use, noting that all such code undergoes human review and is avoided in highly sensitive areas like core trading systems.
Yet, this enthusiasm has drawn sharp criticism, especially now that Cursor stands exposed to a threat that could undermine those very safeguards.
The CopyPasta attack operates with quite a bit of subtlety, exploiting how AI models process and prioritize certain file types.
Attackers embed harmful directives within seemingly innocuous markdown comments—those non-executable notes often tucked away in documentation files like LICENSE.txt or README.md.
These files contain legal boilerplate or project overviews, which AI assistants like Cursor are programmed to regard as sacrosanct.
The model interprets the embedded prompts as essential guidelines, dutifully copying them into any new or modified code it produces.
This creates a self-replicating cycle: once introduced, the malicious content spreads autonomously across repositories, evading detection because it masquerades as routine metadata.
Unlike traditional viruses that rely on overt execution, CopyPasta thrives on the AI’s inherent trust in authoritative sources.
In tests by HiddenLayer, a benign payload was inserted to add a harmless line to Python files, but the real danger lies in weaponizing it.
Malicious versions could install hidden backdoors for unauthorized access, siphon off confidential data, drain computational resources, or even sabotage production environments—all without triggering alarms in standard antivirus scans.
The attack’s stealth is amplified in Cursor’s “Auto-Run” mode, where the tool executes changes without explicit user approval, bypassing built-in protections.
HiddenLayer also found similar weaknesses in competitors like Windsurf, Kiro, and Aider, suggesting this is an industry-wide concern rather than a Cursor-specific flaw.
This revelation hits Coinbase particularly hard, given Armstrong’s seemingly igh-profile push for AI adoption.
In a late-August podcast with Stripe co-founder John Collison, he admitted to “going rogue” by giving engineers just one week to onboard tools like Cursor and GitHub Copilot—or face termination.
“AI’s important. We need you to all learn it,” he recounted telling the team via Slack.
While Armstrong insists on rigorous reviews for non-critical code like user interfaces, the exploit raises questions about oversight in collaborative environments.
